Biography

Joshua M. Rosenberg (PhD, Michigan State University) is Haslam Family Professor and Associate Professor of STEM Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he is also Program Area Director for Computing, AI, and Data in Education, Co-Director of the AI, Data, and Educational Partnerships at the University of Tennessee (ADEPT) Center, and a Faculty Fellow for the Center for Enhancing Education in Mathematics and Sciences.

He studies the use of data in education, especially in STEM education contexts. Specifically, he works in the context of two disciplines: educational data science, a research methods-focused discipline using newer data sources and methods to study teaching, learning, and educational systems, and data science education, a discipline focused on supporting educators and learners to use digital data sources and technologies.

Professor Rosenberg has been awarded more than eight million dollars in grant funding as principal investigator (PI) or co-PI, including an NSF CAREER award. He has shared his research in more than 65 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including Educational Researcher, Journal of Research in Science Teaching, and AERA Open. He also co-authored Data Science in Education Using R (Routledge). This book has an open-access, web-based version accessed more than 150,000 times.

Professor Rosenberg teaches classes in educational data science and STEM education. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Research in Science Teaching and the Journal of Statistics and Data Science Education and an Editorial Review Board Member for the Review of Educational Research and the Journal of Science Education and Technology. He served as a Committee Member for the National Academies study, Developing Competencies for the Future of Data and Computing: The Role of K-12.

Personal

I’m a parent and community member passionate about both work and family. My favorite activities include running, hiking, biking, and camping and backpacking with my family. With my wife, Katie, I wrote Hiking Knoxville: Family Friendly Adventures from the City to the Smokies (University of Tennessee Press, 2026).
