How often are curricular standards mentioned on TV news?
With my friend Patrick, I was curious about using the newsflash package for something education-related. We came up with the idea of looking at mentions of the Common Core State Standards (for Mathematics and English Language Arts / Literacy) and the Next Generation Science Standards (for Science and Engineering).
On broadcast channels
We first looked at mentions across ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and PBS (the way newsflash works is to keyword search the closed captioning streams from the Internet Archive’s Television News Archive):
The Common Core State Standards were mentioned a not-so-impressive 74 times, and the Next Generation Science Standards were mentioned 10. These are not National curricular standards, but rather are those which can be adopted (and adapted, as in the case of Michigan’s K-12 Science Standards), which can explain why they are not mentioned very frequently, possibly. And Common Core State Standards are mentioned a lot more than the Next Generation Science Standards, perhaps because they have been adopted by many more states than the Next Generation Science Standards (although they have been adopted in more than half of the states).
But still, rock climbing was mentioned 1,302 times over the same period, and by a quick search, the Oscars were mentioned 36,190 times.
On cable channels
We wondered if maybe these are mentioned more if you search not ABC, CBS, and so on, but cable news channels (CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, Bloomberg, and others). There is not a substantial difference:
On cable news channels, Common Core State Standards were mentioned 143 times, and the Next Generation Science Standards were mentioned 10 again.
Curricular standards are almost never mentioned on the television news.
Common Core State Standards are mentioned a lot more frequently than the Next Generation Science Standards.
